The recent tragedy and subsequent chatter about guns, immigration, and terrorism has filled the 24/7 news media with a flurry of words, opinions, and time-filling chatter. I watched an interview with five workers from a restaurant near the Boston Marathon bomb sites. They retold their experiences as the bombs exploded and how they had responded to the resulting carnage. They gave example after example of what seemed to be instinctive acts of compassion, protection and, frankly, what would be easy to call heroism. When the program's host asked these folks if they considered themselves heroes, they all responded with emphatic expressions of NO!

That North America has become increasingly secularized is nothing new. The commercial themes of this time of year have long dominated the horizon. Part of this dominant reality is due to the intentional dismissal of the sacred by some, but much of our current situation is due to the priority of consumer-driven life that rules our nation.

The cacophony of the season that includes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, Happy Holidays, and Seasons Greetings just gets a bit too much for me sometimes. It becomes such a tsunami of self-promotion, masquerading as normality, that it leaves one breathless. I must admit that I struggle for some reasonable explanation about what happens in the last quarter of the calendar year. I may have found some personal consolation or at least insight from the French philosopher Rene Descartes. Centuries ago he struggled to find one certain thing from which he could build a framework for life. Famously, he settled on the statement "I think, therefore I am." (In Latin, Cognito, ergo sum). From this statement, Descartes built ideas that have had incredible influence over the centuries. In one sense, the 21st century reflects a massive family who might just be the children of Descartes!
