Viewed as the pivotal event for 2013, the 55th biennial General Council, coming August 5-9 to Orlando, Florida, already has leaders and laypeople looking forward to its arrival. Themed "Believe," the focus of the five-day event is to believe God for greater things.

"John 14:12 encourages us that as we believe that we will see greater things in our lifetime for God's glory," states AG General Superintendent George O. Wood. "I hope for this General Council to be a time when we join together as a movement to believe for greater things in individual lives and in the communities our ministers are laboring in."

The 2013 General Council begins with the two-day Influence Conference (August 5-6). Chosen for their powerful and creative abilities to communicate the gospel and inspire others, speakers for the event include Robert Madu, evangelist and on staff at Trinity Church, Cedar Hills, Texas; Robert Morris, senior pastor of Gateway Church, Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas; Judah Smith, lead pastor of The City Church, Seattle, Washington; Choco de Jesus, senior pastor of New Life Covenant Church, Chicago, Illinois; and Christine Caine, member of the leadership team at Hillsong Church, Sydney, Australia.

National Youth Ministries kicks off its week of rallies, ministry and performances (Fine Arts) with the Monday night opening service for youth. General Council gets in full swing on Tuesday night (August 6), with Dr. Wood being the keynote speaker. Additional speakers include Jim Cymbala of Brooklyn Tabernacle, AGWM Executive Director Greg Mundis and others with worship led by Kurtis Parks, worship leader at National Community Church, Washington, D.C.

J. Don George, executive presbyter and pastor of Calvary Church in Irving, Texas, will speak at the Communion service on Wednesday morning. Author and teacher Ruth Haley Barton and creative artist Anita Renfroe will be guest speakers at the Women in Ministry Reception on Wednesday evening, and former General Superintendent Thomas Trask will speak at the Memorial Breakfast on Thursday morning.

"General Council is the place where tens of thousands of like-minded believers come not only to fellowship, but to be refreshed and hear from God," Wood says. "We are coming together, knowing that we are on the cusp of a spiritual awakening."

In addition to inspirational gatherings, the biennial General Council also is the venue where officials are elected to serve the church, resolutions are considered and voted upon, honors are presented and other matters of the church are addressed.
