In October, the Assemblies of God is launching a concerted call to prayer. Called the 7:14 Prayer Initiative, this call is based upon 2 Chronicles 7:14 - "If my people, who are called my name, will humble themselves and pray . . . I will forgive their sin and heal their land."
Encouraging the entire church body to participate, AG General Superintendent George Wood urges members to take a moment at 7:14 a.m. and 7:14 p.m. each day to pray for a spiritual awakening in the United States; to join the AG general presbytery in committing to fast and pray over the noon hour every Friday (or once a week); and to pray for spiritual awakening and God's guidance in our national elections.
"God has chosen to do some things only through prayer," Wood says, "and the price is high if we don't pray."
General Secretary James Bradford, who has written an insightful and inspiring article on the 7:14 Prayer Initiative, shares how the Second Great Awakening in America occurred when one man opened his church's doors at noon in New York City for an hour of midweek prayer. That commitment to prayer ultimately led to one million conversions and a million more church goers revived in a time when only 30 million people lived in America.
