The Assemblies of God National Youth Department and The Alliance for Assemblies of God Higher Education recently selected the recipients for the 2010 J. Robert Ashcroft National Youth Scholarships. Applicants for this honor, high school seniors, were judged in several categories including academics, extra-curricular involvement, Christian service, Christian life, financial need, essay and references.
The winners were: Logan Wolford of Ridgeley, West Virginia; Amanda Lindgren of Butte, Montana; and Megan Waldner of Huron, South Dakota.

First place, a scholarship for $8,000, was awarded to Logan
Wolford. Son of Don and Tammy Wolford, Logan maintained a 4.0 GPA and graduated
in May from Frankfort High School. Logan
served as president of National Honor Society during his senior year, and
during his high school career, he was involved in jazz band, football,
basketball and track. He also
participated in Youth Alive and student government.
Logan
served his community by participating in Special Olympics, Multiple Sclerosis
Walk and serving as a pianist for the nursing home during holidays and for a
benefit auction.
He
has been involved in his church as a member of Royal Rangers, Mega Sports Camp,
Vacation Bible schools, Junior Bible Quiz, Fine Arts Festival and the 7
Project. He has actively participated in
his youth group as a guest speaker, member of the worship team and an usher. In
the fall of 2010, he plans to attend Southeastern University in Lakeland,
Florida.
Logan’s
goal is to become physician, and he says, “Although many would argue the
medical field does not require a Christian College education, I beg to differ. Through
being a doctor, a lot of doors would open [for witnessing], and I believe that
a solid foundation built at a Christian College would help to reach the lost in
a place other than church.”
The second place scholarship of $4,000
was awarded to Amanda Lindgren. Daughter of Randy and Tammy Lindgren, Amanda
graduated from Butte High School in June. She received numerous academic honors
including National Honor Society and High Honor Roll. Amanda served as a leader of Youth Alive and
participated in choir and drama during her high school career.
Amanda
has been involved in the community through the Multiple Sclerosis Walk, United
Way, food drives, and nursing home visits.
In
her youth group, Amanda serves as a small group leader, computer/audio
technician, worship team leader, emcee and party coordinator. Amanda has also
participated in Fine Arts, AIM missions trips, and the Fire Institute. She has served as a Sunday school teacher,
kids church helper, nursery worker, and VBS worker. In the fall of 2010, Amanda plans to attend Trinity
Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota.
Amanda
stated, “Being called to the mission field at age 11, I feel that attending a
college linked to our fellowship would be the best choice for my education…I
will be pursuing an education degree to open more options as an overseas
missionary.”
Third
place, a $2,000 scholarship, was awarded to Megan Waldner. Daughter of Wayne
and Sara Waldner, Megan maintained a 4.0, was a member of National Honor
Society, and graduated from Huron High School in May. During her high school
career, Megan participated in band, choir, dance team, drama club, German club,
debate team, theatre productions and color guard.
In
her community, Megan was involved with Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army outreach,
nursing home visitation and a 4-H show choir.
At
church Megan taught Sunday school, led worship in youth group, and served as a
nursery worker. In addition, she participated
in drama, Speed the Light fundraisers, Bible Quiz, Fine Arts Festival and an
AIM missions trip to El Salvador. This
fall, she plans to attend North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Megan says, “Jesus has a plan for my
life, and with the Christian leadership, Christian classes, and spiritual
atmosphere of an AG college, my life will prosper and over flow with the love
of Jesus Christ.”
The
Assemblies of God National Youth Department and The Alliance for Assemblies of
God Higher Education sponsor the J. Robert Ashcroft National Youth Scholarship
Program annually. Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who attend Assemblies
of God churches (or are dependents of Assemblies of God missionaries) and who
plan to attend an Assemblies of God endorsed college upon graduation.
Applications are available from district youth directors after November and are
accepted from December 1st to February 1st each year at the district youth directors'
offices.
