HealthCare Ministries has announced that it is committing the month of March 2010 to sending out medical teams to Haiti to treat the medical needs resulting from the earthquake disaster. Each week in March a different team will be sent into the country to conduct mobile clinics in six locations around the capital of Port au Prince.
HCM's disaster coordinator, Rick Salvato, says that the teams will be focusing on primary care and rehabilitation for the displaced victims of the earthquake.
According to HCM Director Deb Highfill, HCM hopes to provide a long-term medical presence by partnering with AG missionaries in country, empowering the local church to continue reaching out and rebuilding their community, and involving Haitian medical students in the clinic.
"Healthcare Ministries' teams do more than meet physical needs," explains Randy Hurst, AG World Missions Communications director. "They also provide prayer and counseling to the suffering and share the message of Christ however possible. Through their clinics and outreaches more than 84,000 have received Christ. After the recent disaster in the Philippines, the Healthcare medical relief team was able to treat 1,856 patients in just seven days and several hundred of those made commitments to follow Christ."
Due to the overwhelming response from healthcare providers willing to serve, HCM has structured many of the teams already. However, Highfill says they still need physical therapists and occupational therapists to help with rehabilitation.
For those interested in participating, contact information and medical profession should be sent to HaitiResponse@healthcareministries.org. Those who have not previously traveled on a medical outreach with HealthCare Ministries will need to fill out the team member application form. The completed application should be faxed to 417-866-4972, or scanned and e-mailed to logistics@healthcareministries.org.
