I am in debt to my good friends and
colleagues John and Glenda Harris for having sent me the book “The Waiting
Father: Sermons on the Parables of Jesus” by Helmut Thielicke. I want to share
a quote with you today, because it’s so pertinent to our spiritual
well-being. Thielicke says,
“The man who lets his day grow recklessly
and blindly, that is, the man who does not begin his day by talking with God
before he goes on to the thousands of words, written and oral, which he must
speak to men, that man grows rotten, both physically and nervously. And what has been called
“executive’s disease,” the symptoms of which are ulcers and heart attacks, is
often only a symptom of these deeper disorders in the soil of our life.”
How often has this happened in our own
lives? In order to expedite the responsibilities of the day, we sometimes leave
home without the most important aspect of our life, which is, of course,
consulting with God about all those responsibilities and duties we have to perform
in the course of the day. It is generally counterproductive, because we end up
spending more time correcting errors we have made when we proceed without
divine orders.
I have often lamented the time it has
taken me to straighten things out that could have been expedited simply by
consulting the Lord of my life and meditating in His presence. I don’t think
any of us are exempt from this need. How important it is that we all go back to
the principles of our divine walk with God. It is essential to have that
relationship with God before performing the duties before us.
